OUR STORY
Made by hand, in the Northwoods.
How a cabin kitchen experiment turned into a small shop on the edge of the pines.
Northwoods Co. began at a kitchen table in northern Wisconsin, where one too many drugstore lotions had left behind sticky residue and a list of ingredients we couldn’t pronounce. We started rendering beef tallow the old way — slow, low heat, patience — and whipping it into something our hands actually wanted to wear.
Tallow is what people used before the petroleum industry rewrote the shelf at the pharmacy. It’s remarkably close to the lipids in human skin, which is why it absorbs the way it does: quickly, without fuss, and without that synthetic squeak. We source from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle in the Midwest, then trim, render, and clarify every batch ourselves.
Wisconsin matters here. The water is soft, the winters are honest, and the agricultural traditions that built this state still favor doing things the slow way when the slow way is the right way. Every jar and bar is poured, cured, labeled, and packed by a very small team — usually just two of us, with the dog supervising.
We make small batches on purpose. It keeps the ingredients fresh, it keeps us close to the work, and it means if something isn’t right, we hear about it and we fix it. Thanks for being here.
